What to do during a dental emergency - Emergency first aid tips from your dentist in Mississauga ON
A dental emergency can occur on the most innocent of days. Maybe
you are walking in the park and a skateboarder slams into you. Maybe you were
enjoying a boating day on the lake when your companion’s paddle connects with
your mouth by mistake. You envision any oral injury to happen during a road
accident or on the playing field, but that’s not always the case. No matter
where and when it happens, you need to know how to deal with a dental emergency
until you get professional help. Here are some emergency first aid tips from
your dentist in Mississauga ON.
What needs to be done first?
Call your dentist and remain calm. No matter what you do
initially, you will need medical intervention so make sure to ask for it
immediately. Your dentist can talk you through any specific problem until you
reach the dental clinic. The following information should be helpful to you in
any case:
Knocked-out tooth – If you can find the missing tooth, place your
fingers on the crown (visible portion above the gum line) and pick it up, then
rinse it in clean water. Do not touch or disturb any attached tissue or the
roots. If possible, try to place the tooth back in its socket. If not, keep it
in a glass of milk until you get to the dental clinic.
Toothache – This may not worry you as much as a knocked-out tooth
because you’ve experienced it before, but never take it lightly. You need to go
see your dentist anyway, and he can determine how serious a problem it is to
your oral health. Do not brush that tooth, but rinsing it with warm salt water
is a good idea.
Chipping/cracking/breaking – Collect parts that have broken off
and keep them in a glass of milk. Getting immediate help is important to avoid
tooth infection.
When should you go to the emergency room (ER)?
Continuous bleeding – A tear in your mouth or even cheeks can
create a large flow of blood.
Injury to the jaw - This needs special attention.
