A dentist in Scarborough, ON explains dental sensitivity

What is dental sensitivity?

If you have difficulty eating or drinking hot or cold foods and beverages or sweet and sour food because they cause pain your teeth, these are signs of dental sensitivity. If this is the case, it might be a good idea to visit your dentist to investigate what causes the sensitivity.

What causes dental sensitivity?

The enamel in your teeth is a hard substance and covers the outer layer of the tooth. It is also the most visible part of the tooth. Sensitivity is usually caused when the enamel on the tooth is worn out and the nerve endings of the tooth (dentin) are exposed. When the patient eats or drinks food or beverages that are hot or cold, the patient is able to feel this sensation instantly, causing a ‘pain’ like feeling.

There can be a number of reasons as to how the enamel is worn out. These are:
  •       Wear and tear, this can be due to aggressive brushing, bruxism (clenching of teeth), or bleaching (due to excessive use of teeth whitening)
  •       A cracked tooth or filling

Another probable cause for sensitive teeth is gum disease. The thinning of the gum line can cause the teeth’s roots to be exposed, causing sensitivity issues.

How is teeth sensitivity treated?

Once the root cause has been identified, your dentist will devise an appropriate treatment plan.

If your case is a mild problem, most Scarborough, ON dentists may suggest:
  •       Not brush hard, especially the areas that is suspected as sensitive
  •       Use a special toothpaste that is specifically designed for sensitive teeth
  •       Have a dental sealant applied to the problem area

If a dental sealant isn’t quite sufficient, the suspected teeth maybe restored with an appropriate dental filling. For more serious cases, the dentist may suggest root canal treatment.
