How to get emergency dental care in Calgary

Your dentist should be contacted immediately if you encounter a dental emergency.

Knocked out tooth

A knocked out tooth will require urgent attention. When appropriate emergency procedures are followed, the chances are greater that your tooth can be reinserted and preserved by the dentist.

Pick up the tooth by the crown and do not touch the tooth roots. Rinse the tooth in water to make sure it is clean. Do not remove any attached tissue or scrub it. Be sure to keep a washcloth or a towel in the sink to avoid losing your tooth down the drain. Try to gently place the knocked-out tooth back into the tooth's socket. Hold the tooth gently down in its place and try to bite down on it.

If you find it hard to place your tooth back into the socket, put the tooth in a cup of milk. Make an immediate call to your dentist. It will be critical in saving your knocked-out tooth. The longer you take in re-implanting your tooth, the less chance of your tooth remaining viable.

Loose tooth or out of alignment

If you have a tooth that is turned or tooth that is loose, you should contact your dentist for an emergency appointment. You can try to put your tooth back to its original position with your finger using very light pressure in the meantime. You should not force it. You can try to bite down to prevent it from moving.

Fractured, chipped, or cracked tooth

If your tooth is chipped and does not hurt, it may not be a dental emergency.  You should be careful when you chew as it could get chipped even more. Your dentist may use a filling material to repair the tooth or smooth the chip out of the tooth. A cracked or fractured tooth is serious and constitutes a dental emergency.
