Some oral surgeons and dentists may recommend removal of wisdom teeth even if the impacted teeth are not causing a problem. Wisdom teeth are the last of your teeth to erupt and come through your gums. Sometimes a tooth can become stuck below the surface of the gums, grow at an odd angle, become impacted, and lead to complications. The third molars or wisdom teeth are the last teeth to erupt from the mouth.  These teeth erupt between the ages of 17 and 25. Some people will never come across wisdom teeth while for others, wisdom teeth will erupt normally as their other molars did without causing any problem.

Many people will have the potential of developing impacted wisdom teeth. These teeth will not have enough room to erupt into the mouth and grow in a normal manner. Impacted wisdom teeth may not erupt at all or may partially erupt.

You will need to remove an impacted wisdom tooth if it results in the following problems:
          Infections
•          Pain
•          Damage to surrounding bone structure
•          Development of fluid-filled sacs around the wisdom tooth
•          Complications when straightening your teeth using orthodontic treatments.

What can I expect during the procedure?
Your doctor may consider using one of three types of anesthesia. The appropriate anesthesia will depend on the complexity of the wisdom tooth extraction and your comfort level.

Local anesthesia
Your oral surgeon or doctor in Mississauga will administer local anesthesia using injections near the site of the wisdom tooth extraction. Your dentist may apply a substance to the gums to numb the area before administering the injections. You will not experience any pain although you may feel pressure and movement. You will be awake when the tooth extraction takes place.

Sedation anesthesia
Your oral surgeon or doctor will give sedation anesthesia through the arms intravenous line. Sedation anesthesia will suppress your consciousness during the procedure and not let you feel any pain.

General anesthesia

Special situations may require general anesthesia. You will need to inhale the medication through your nose. General anesthesia will make you lose your consciousness so you will not be able to feel any pain during the extraction.
